Taking your Swedish further, without the studying

Most Swedish courses stop just as it gets interesting. You finish the beginner material, you know the words, and then there is nowhere obvious to go. The gap between "I have studied some Swedish" and "I can read Swedish written by a Swede" is where most learners quietly stall. What gets you across it here is a story you want to finish, which turns out to be a far better reason to keep going than discipline.

Travel Diaries works because it gives you something to follow. Each lesson is built around a diary entry written by someone on a real journey, in natural Swedish, about an ordinary day. Not a textbook dialogue, not a list of phrases for the airport. Just a person describing what happened, the way they would to a friend.

Then Hanna and Mark take that entry apart with you, line by line, so nothing goes past you unexplained.

The journey

Ten diary entries, one family, one summer.

Down the west coast

Marstrandsön, Koön and the Bohuslän coast

Mattias drives his wife Sara and their children Alva and Arvid from Uppsala to the west coast, where he grew up. Ten diary entries of a family summer: islands, harbours, sea air and a six-hour car journey with two children in the back.

Curious about the level?

Here is Mattias's diary from Lesson 7, well into the trip. The family have reached Gothenburg and are spending the day exploring the city. By this point the entries are using the past and perfect tenses freely, which is exactly the ground the course covers.

That is the level. If you can get the gist of it and would want a hand with the rest, this course is aimed squarely at you. Hanna and Mark go through every line of every entry.

How each lesson works

The same three steps, 10 times over. Simple enough to keep going with, thorough enough to move you on.

Step one

Read the diary

A page of real written Swedish, the kind a person actually writes about their own day. You read it first, and see how much you get.

Step two

Work through it together

Hanna and Mark go through the whole entry: the vocabulary, the grammar and the turns of phrase that make it sound like a native speaker wrote it.

Step three

Say it out loud

The video pronunciation practice replays the text with a pause after every phrase, so you can repeat it properly rather than just recognising it.

What you get

Who is behind this?

Coffee Break Languages has been teaching languages since 2006, and our lessons have been downloaded hundreds of millions of times. The courses are written and taught by real teachers, at a pace built around the time people actually have.

Coffee Break Swedish is taught by Hanna, a native speaker, alongside Mark, who learns in the lessons the way you do. You hear the questions a learner would actually ask, and the answers.

Who this is for

Upper beginners and lower intermediates. You have some Swedish already, maybe from Coffee Break Swedish Level 1 or somewhere else, and you can handle the present tense and a decent stock of words. What you want now is more range, more confidence, and the experience of meeting Swedish as Swedes actually write it.

That is exactly the gap this fills. Longer texts than a beginner course, but every line explained, so you are stretched without being stranded. You will pick up new tenses and structures in context, widen your vocabulary a long way, and get noticeably better at understanding.

Not there yet? Start at the beginning

The Travel Diaries assume you have some Swedish already. If you are starting from nothing, this is the course to start with, and it is by far the most common way people come to us.

What learners say

I love these lessons! I've completed the Coffee Break French course before so I was really excited to move onto Coffee Break Swedish. Great lessons and so clear and easy to pick up. Tack!

Bessie

I decided to learn Swedish for several reasons. I have visited Åre twice and loved it there so I intend to visit Sweden again. I'm hoping that the new mental challenge of language learning will help keep my brain active. Thank you Mark and Hanna for this excellent course.

Questions, answered

Do I need to have done other Coffee Break Swedish courses first?

No. Travel Diaries stands on its own. It assumes some Swedish, not any particular course.

How long will it take me?

10 lessons, around five hours of audio, plus the notes and pronunciation practice. Most people do one or two a week. There is no schedule and no deadline once you are in.

How long do I have access?

Forever. It is a one-off payment, and you can download the audio, notes and video to keep.

I have never studied Swedish at all. Should I start here?

No, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong thing. Start with Coffee Break Swedish Level 1, then come back once you are comfortable talking about things that have already happened.

Is it the podcast, or something more?

The audio lessons are the heart of it, and there is a lot more around them: the written notes for every episode, the full diary texts, and the video pronunciation practice, all in one place in the Academy.

What if it turns out not to be for me?

Everything is digital and available to download the moment you join, so we do not offer refunds. If you are unsure whether the level is right, email team@coffeebreaklanguages.com before you buy and we will give you an honest answer.
