Travel Diaries works because it gives you something to follow. Each lesson is built around a diary entry written by someone on a real journey, in natural Spanish, about an ordinary day. Not a textbook dialogue, not a list of phrases for the airport. Just a person describing what happened, the way they would to a friend.
Then Anabel, Marina and Mark take that entry apart with you, line by line, so nothing goes unexplained.
Both seasons, in full. Each follows a different set of people on a different kind of trip, so you get two registers of Spanish rather than more of the same.
Victoria and her husband Abel travel the north coast on their honeymoon, and Victoria keeps the diary: San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santillana del Mar, the blowholes and hidden beaches out towards Llanes, the lakes at Covadonga, and the everyday Spanish that holds it all together.
Ainhoa, her friend Luisa and her brother Esteban set off after college for Peru, Bolivia and Chile. A great introduction to how differently Spanish sounds across the continent.
Here is a real sample from one of Ainhoa's diary entries in Season 2. She, Luisa and Esteban have just arrived in the Bolivian capital, La Paz.
En La Paz nos esperaban muchas cosas que ver y, sobre todo, mucha comida para probar. Desayunamos en el Mercado de Nicolás Bravo y estuvimos visitando el centro de la ciudad. Vimos la Basílica de San Francisco y la Plaza Murillo. ¡La plaza estaba llena de palomas! Como Esteban les tenía fobia, no nos quedamos mucho tiempo.
Luisa tomó fotos desde la distancia y logró hacer una en la que aparecía su hermano con cara de pánico. ¡Pobrecito, aunque fue gracioso! Para compensar el mal trago, le invitamos a comer chile relleno de pulpo a la diabla. Cuando terminamos, nos pasamos por el Mercado de Brujas, donde vendían desde recuerdos hasta pociones. Me compré un amuleto y cogí un par de souvenirs para mis padres.

Anabel, Marina and Mark go through the whole entry: the vocabulary, the grammar and the turns of phrase that make it sound like a native speaker wrote it.
The video pronunciation practice replays the text with a pause after every phrase, so you can repeat it properly rather than just recognising it.
Travel Diaries is written for intermediate learners, roughly B1 to B2. You should be comfortable with the present and the past, and ready to spend time with longer stretches of real Spanish rather than single sentences.
If you have worked through seasons 2 or 3 of Coffee Break Spanish then the Travel Diaries will be perfect for you. If you are at an earlier stage than that, the course will feel like hard work, so one of our lower intermediate courses may be better suited to your current stage.
This is another excellent series. For me the success of this series is due to a number of reasons including: the context of travel diary provides an opportunity to study a specific genre with its associated grammatical structures. The context of a diary provides the added interest and opportunity for being able to research, in one's own time, the routes of travel and places of interest… The level and challenge of text allowed me to consolidate existing knowledge and be challenged to learn new things… I have found all of the Coffee Break programmes that I have subscribed to interesting, well organised, well structured and excellent value.
